The holy month of Ramadan is here and Nokia is pushing their Ramadan Apps in the Muslim World big time but they have made a folly of only letting 12 models to be able to run these applications which can only be downloaded from the OVI Store . I’ve suggested to Nokia to let the applications be Platform dependent than device dependent but still none are available , so my alternate is my iPhone which has my required applications.
iTunes has a load of applications available related to Ramadan and Islam provided by GuidedWays , T-Bone , iPhone Islam and also our very own Pakistani - Lahore based TkXEL .
The main applications in my use are iPray Pro , iQuran and iAzkar beside others I’ve installed
iPray Pro by Guided Ways is an alternate to Nokia’s Salat Timings App and it also supports ‘Push’ for Salat Timings
Setting up and usage of iPray Pro is simple , launch the App , go to Timings , the default timings are for Makkah – Saudi Arabia which you can change for your own city using Auto Detect via GPS / Location based services or by choosing the city yourself from the list of countries and cities.
The Settings also allow setup of Asr Namaz Timings as per Shafi / Maliki / Hanabali or Hanafi sect .
For Qibla FInder the application uses two methods one is through pointing the the onscreen Compass towards North and finding out or through GPS with Google Maps Street View as my iPhone 3G does not have Magnetometer , I had to calibrate with my street map to find the Qibla through the Red Line
The application also offers different Adhan options from Madina Fajar and Makkah Regular to Yousuf Islam
Above all once everything is set it shows Push notifications as per the timings on iPhone even when the application is closed
The application is available Free of Cost as iPray regular without GPS support and Push notification for Fajr only or PRo version available from iTunes for USD $3.99
iQuran Pro
A complete Quran Suite offering not only the Quran but also multiple Translations and Recitations. The added advantage is that not only it indexes by Surah but also by 30 Parahs and also support book mark options . The Hadiya is Free for iQuran and USD 10.99 for iQuran Pro .
iAzkar
Covers the morning , evening and other supplications , the program is in Arabic but easier to read for those familiar with the alphabets but not the language – Available for Free from iTunes
These are the main applications I’m using this Ramzan , there are plenty more which I will cover later as I use them
Do you have any favorites Ramadan Applications , do share
